Description

Coltrane Jazz is a John Coltrane album recorded in 1959 and 1960, featuring former Miles Davis bandmates on most of its tracks. It suits listeners exploring Coltrane’s work before his influential 1960s albums.

The album blends standards with original compositions, and has been described as a preparation for Coltrane’s peak years in the 1960s. Highlights include the melodic leaps of “Harmonique” and the winding, Eastern-flavoured riffs of “Like Sonny”.

Most of the album features pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb. “Village Blues” features McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums and Steve Davis on bass.
