Salman Toor: Someone Like You

This exhibition catalog offers new insights into the iconic, thought-provoking, and humorous paintings of Salman Toor. The works explore human interactions, the desire to belong, and the complexities of queer and immigrant lives that navigate multiple cultures.

Salman Toor (b. 1983) is celebrated for his vibrant paintings that capture shared moments of friendship and love, as well as experiences of solitude and alienation. Though fictional, his characters are rooted in personal experiences and memories. Toor describes his paintings as depicting 'queer and immigrant lives that straddle different cultures and inhabit the tension between intimacy and exposure, belonging and estrangement. What it means to find a community, but also the daily costs associated with visibility.'

Salman Toor: Someone Like You delves into the artist's manifold references and illuminates the crucial role drawing plays in his painting practice. Born in Lahore, Pakistan, Toor trained in the United States and currently lives and works in New York. His major international exhibitions include his acclaimed first institutional solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2020-21). This catalog accompanies The Courtauld's exhibition, Toor's first solo museum show in Europe.
