Description
Discover 'Captain Marryat,' a lost gem of British progressive hard-rock, privately pressed in Scotland in 1974. Originally released in a limited run of 150-200 copies on the band's own Thor label and sold exclusively at gigs, this album has become one of the era's rarest and most sought-after private press LPs.
Named after the 19th-century novelist and seafarer, the Glaswegian band Captain Marryat evolved into a five-piece, featuring Tommy Hendry (vocals), Ian McEleny (guitar), Allan Bryce (organ), Hugh Finnegan (bass), and Jimmy Rorrison (drums). Initially planning a single, they utilized studio time to record a full album, comprising five original songs and the improvised instrumental "Dance Of Thor." Deeply influenced by the organ-driven sound of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, and Beggars Opera, Captain Marryat delivered a potent mix of progressive rock and heavy psych. The album is characterized by its thunderous Hammond organ, raw guitar solos, and strong melodic vocals.
Explore standout tracks such as the dramatic opener "Blindness," the epic eight-minute "It Happened To Me," the more accessible "Changes," and the explosive instrumental finale "Dance Of Thor." Despite building a strong reputation on the Scottish pub circuit, the band's career concluded in 1975 due to a lack of label interest. However, their sole album has since achieved cult status among collectors and fans of early 70s progressive heavy rock.
